Trama

New York.
A causa di uno scambio di identità Slevin rimane coinvolto nella guerra ordita da due capi criminali acerrimi nemici:
"il Rabbino" e "il Boss". Slevin è costantemente sorvegliato dall'inflessibile detective Brikowski e dallo scellerato
assassino Goodkat. Per riuscire ad uscirne vivo Slevin dovrà tramare un'ingegnosa congiura.
Un ragazzo si siede
nella sala d'aspetto di una stazione ferroviaria. Poco dopo, appare un signore su una sedia a rotelle, che inizia a
spiegargli la "mossa Kansas City": «La mossa Kansas City è quando tu guardi a destra e loro arrivano a
sinistra», ossia un diversivo che sposta l'attenzione dal bersaglio effettivo. L'uomo gli racconta poi la storia di
un certo Max, protagonista di quella che molti credono una leggenda metropolitana vecchia di vent'anni. Max è un
giovane padre di famiglia che abita a New York con la moglie e il figlio Harry. Un giorno Max viene a sapere da suo zio
(il quale ha origliato una conversazione tra due uomini) che ci sarebbe stata una corsa truccata all'ippodromo, in cui
avrebbe gareggiato un cavallo drogato, Lucky Number Slevin. Vedendo l'opportunità di rimediare il denaro per mandare
suo figlio all'università, Max si reca da un allibratore, Roth, il quale piazza la sua scommessa di 20 000 dollari e
la passa a due gangster, chiamati Boss e Rabbino. Il giorno della corsa, Max si reca all'ippodromo con il figlio,
lasciandolo in macchina. Il cavallo muore poco prima di arrivare al traguardo, e i due boss reclamano il denaro
promessogli da Max se la scommessa fosse stata persa, ma Max sfortunatamente non li ha. Decidono quindi di dare un
esempio forte sterminando tutti coloro che hanno preso parte alla gara truccata: Max viene torturato e ucciso mentre due
sicari vengono mandati a uccidere la moglie e il figlio. Dopo aver finito di raccontare la sua storia, l'uomo uccide il
giovane e lo porta su un camion a bordo di una sedia a rotelle.
La scena si sposta su Slevin Kelevra. Slevin si
è trasferito nell'appartamento dell'amico Nick Fisher sotto suo invito dopo che la sua vita ha preso una brutta
piega. Qui conosce Lindsey, medico legale, la sua nuova vicina di casa. I due fanno amicizia ma, poco dopo che Lindsey
se ne è andata, bussano alla porta due individui, Elvis e Lento, che, credendo che sia Nick, minacciano Slevin e lo
costringono a presentarsi al Boss. Questi, pretende che Slevin gli paghi un debito di 96 000 dollari che in realtà
appartiene a Nick. Dichiarando di non possedere quella somma, Slevin cade in un guaio peggiore: il Boss lo costringe a
pagare il suo debito uccidendo il figlio del Rabbino, Ytzach, in quanto crede che sia stato il Rabbino a uccidere suo
figlio. Slevin non può che accettare e viene riportato a casa. Poco dopo il suo arrivo a casa, Slevin viene
nuovamente prelevato, questa volta da due ebrei ortodossi che lo portano dal Rabbino. Il Rabbino afferma che Slevin
(scambiato anche da loro per Nick) gli deve 33.000 dollari e gli dà due giorni di tempo per racimolare la somma.
Tornato a casa, incontra Lindsey e le racconta l'intera faccenda. I due, tentando di scoprire che fine ha fatto Nick,
rintracciano la sua ultima chiamata, scoprendo che arriva dall'hotel Cheval. Per vederci chiaro, Lindsey ci si reca e ci
trova Smith (da lei intravisto in precedenza salire su un taxi) e gli scatta una foto di nascosto con il cellulare. La
fa vedere a Slevin per sapere se per caso lo conosce ma Slevin nega.
Il giorno seguente Slevin si reca dal Boss che
gli concede tre giorni di tempo per uccidere Ytzach. Durante la sua riunione col Boss, Slevin incontra Mr. Goodkat, che
altri non è che il signor Smith, un killer professionista fuoriclasse. Uscendo dall edificio, Slevin viene visto
dagli agenti Brikowsky e Dumbrowsky, che gli scattano qualche foto per saperne di più.
Quella sera, Slevin esce
a cena con Lindsey e la porta nello stesso ristorante in cui sa che cena il figlio del Rabbino, per tentare un incontro
con lui. Riesce ad ottenere un appuntamento con lui e, terminata la cena, esce con Lindsey. Per strada i due si rendono
conto di essere fatti l'uno per l'altra e, tornati a casa, passano la notte assieme. La mattina, Slevin esce per
prendere il caffè ma viene bloccato dagli agenti Dumbrowsky e Brikowsky che gli fanno qualche domanda senza ottenere
nulla. La sera, Slevin si reca a casa di Ytzach e lo uccide. In quel momento arriva nell'appartamento Goodkat, che
finisce il figlio del Rabbino e manda Slevin a prendere un sacco in macchina. Nel sacco c'è Nick Fisher, il giovane
ucciso alla stazione all'inizio del film. Goodkat attira le guardie del corpo del ragazzo nell'appartamento e le uccide;
in seguito fa esplodere l'appartamento e se ne va con Slevin, che mette al polso di Fisher il suo orologio grazie al
quale il corpo di Fisher verrà identificato come il suo.
La sera dopo, Goodkat si presenta all'obitorio da
Lindsey e le spara per via della foto che gli ha scattato dicendo: «anche io ho lo stesso cellulare». Slevin,
intanto, si è recato dal Rabbino apparentemente per pagare il debito, ma con un colpo alla testa lo tramortisce e lo
porta a casa del Boss, legando i due alle loro sedie. Qui si scopre che in realtà Slevin è il figlio di Max,
sopravvissuto grazie alla clemenza di Goodkat che non ce l'ha fatta ad ucciderlo e lo ha cresciuto. Slevin spiega tutto
ai due che rimangono increduli. Infine, li uccide come loro avevano ucciso suo padre, soffocandoli con un sacchetto di
plastica in testa.

Plot

During the film's opening credits,
two bookies are separately ambushed and murdered, their ledgers stolen from their bodies by the unseen killer.
Elsewhere, a young black man walks out of a downtown building and is shot by a sniper.
In a bus terminal, a young
man is approached by a man in a wheelchair, Goodkat (Bruce Willis), who tells the story of Max and the Kansas City
Shuffle. Around twenty years ago, Max bet borrowed money on a fixed horse race. The horse fell before the finish line
and Max, unable to pay, was murdered by the mobsters financing the race. To send a message they also arranged the murder
of Max's wife and son. Goodkat concludes the story, revealing that the Kansas City Shuffle is when "they look left and
you go right" and promptly snaps the young man's neck. He leaves the terminal with the body in the back of a truck.
In New York City, Slevin Kelevra (Josh Hartnett) is staying in his friend Nick Fisher's apartment nursing a broken
nose. He answers the door, meeting neighbor Lindsey (Lucy Liu), who ducks in to borrow some sugar. Slevin relates that
he is visiting after some recent bad luck and explains the broken nose as the result of a mugging. He confesses he has
not seen Nick and that the apartment was unlocked when he arrived. Lindsey suggests that Nick may be missing and that
she and Slevin should investigate together.
Lindsey leaves for work moments before Slevin is kidnapped by two black
henchmen. They take him to The Boss, a powerful crime lord leading an all-black crime syndicate. Mistaking Slevin for
Nick, The Boss orders Slevin to repay a large gambling debt. It is revealed that the young black man assassinated in the
opening credits is The Boss's son. Believing his rival The Rabbi to be responsible, The Boss offers Slevin the
opportunity to murder The Rabbi's homosexual son, Yitzchok The Fairy, as an alternative to payment. After Slevin leaves,
Goodkat steps out of the shadows and it is revealed that The Boss has simultaneously hired him to kill The Fairy.
Slevin returns to the apartment but is shortly kidnapped again, this time by two henchmen from The Rabbi's all-Jewish
crime syndicate. The Rabbi also mistakes Slevin for Nick and demands he repay another large gambling debt. As Slevin
leaves, Goodkat again steps out of the shadows and it is revealed that he is enigmatically aware that Slevin is not Nick
Fisher.
Slevin returns to The Boss and agrees to kill The Fairy. The Boss gives him three days and recommends that
Slevin approach The Fairy romantically. Intercut with this conversation, Goodkat tells the Boss that he will kill Slevin
after Slevin kills The Fairy, concealing both murders by making them look like a double suicide.
Slevin and Lindsey
go out to dinner at The Fairy's favorite restaurant. Slevin approaches The Fairy in the restroom and arranges a future
date. Slevin also meets Detective Brikowski, currently investigating The Boss and The Rabbi, but does not disclose his
intended role as hitman. Returning home, Slevin and Lindsey's relationship develops and they spend the night
together.
In the morning Slevin is hassled again by Brikowski but reveals only his name. That evening he is picked
up by The Boss's henchmen in preparation for his date with The Fairy. As they leave it is revealed that The Rabbi's
henchmen, keeping track of Slevin, have been shot.
Slevin arrives at The Fairy's apartment and promptly shoots him,
nearly killing him. Goodkat appears behind Slevin and, in an apparent turn of events, finishes The Fairy off and leaves
Slevin unharmed. Now revealed to be a team, Slevin brings the body of the bus terminal victim, revealed to be the true
Nick Fisher, into the apartment while Goodkat kills The Fairy's bodyguards. Together they blow up the apartment and the
bodies, thus concealing Slevin's false identity as Nick.
Goodkat kills the Boss's henchmen and takes him hostage
while Slevin kidnaps the Rabbi. Both men awaken restrained to chairs in the Boss's penthouse. Slevin appears and
explains the overarching twist: the ill-fated Max was Slevin's father, the mobsters who killed him were The Boss and The
Rabbi, and Slevin's own murder was never completed as the hitman hired to do the job, revealed to be Goodkat himself,
found compassion for him.

Note

Un cast eccellente per una regia eccellente e, per concludere, una
produzione eccellente, hanno dato via a questo crime/thriller dal sapore divertente, infatti, la trama si basa sulle
disavventure del protagonista che quasi per caso si ritrova in una situazione piu grande di lui che dovrà gestire al
meglio.
Il film è divertente ed irreverente togliendo, in parte, la sacralità che distingue la mala americana
rendondola, in qualche modo, piu "accessibile".
Ottimo film con cui passare un paio d'ore riusciendo ad
accontentare diverse fazioni di pubblico, proprio per la particolarità che potrebbe abbracciare piu generi e non si
restringe ad un solo campo.
Buon down e, come al solito, mi raccomando per il seed.
